"Foreign Object in Nose" Kid
Colin was this kid at the ER today. On Thursday evening Colin told me how he had stuck something in his nose at daycare that day but then they got it out. We had a talk about how we don't stick things in our noses and how he wouldn't do it again. However, I failed to actually look in his nose to make sure it was all okay. Since I believed him that he put something up there, I mistakenly believed him that they got it out.
Fast forward to this morning. Colin starts complaining that his nose hurts. Awhile later he starts bleeding pretty bad. It stops and then he sneezes and it starts again, quite a bit of blood. I take a closer look and realize his nose is swollen. I finally remember the conversation on Thursday and look up his nose....there it is.
This(not the penny) is what was in his nose.
Since it's Sunday morning and no offices are open, we head to the ER. They check us in and take us back to the room. The nurse asks the desk "which room are we putting 'foreign object in nose kid'?" I can not remember what Colin had told me he put up there and he's reluctant to talk about it. I ask him again and he tells me about a "ring that you put on your finger. It broke and then I put it in my nose."
I talk to Colin about being brave and how they're going to have to pull the ring out of his nose.
The nurse comes in and starts talking about how when it's been in there awhile the object often starts to grow into the nose and they need an ENT specialist to get it out. Or, it could create a hole in the septum(I think that's what it's called). She starts to get me nervous. We get Colin up onto the table so she can take a closer look. She gets the light up to his nose and tries to look inside. He's getting fussy but doing pretty well considering the circumstances. She realizes there's too much blood in there and calls someone to bring in suction. Colin sneezes....a big gob of blood comes out. She checks in it to see if the object is in it but it's not. She looks into Colin's nose and doesn't see it there either. I look around and find it laying on his lap. He had sneezed it out with some force and it flew.
They double checked into his nose and made sure it didn't look like there was any damage. The nurse said the size of the object was impressive to be in his nose, especially since it was there 3 days. The dr told us what signs of infection to be on the lookout for. They gave Colin a popsicle for doing so well and we were on our way home.
We've talked a lot now about not putting things in your nose. Hopefully we don't have anything like this again.
